Julia Wilson wins Excellence Award for STEP Advanced Certificate in Cross-Border Estates

Congratulations to Julia Wilson who has been awarded an Excellence Award by the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) for the dissertation she submitted for the STEP Advanced Certificate in Cross-Border Estates, an internationally recognised qualification.  Julia achieved the joint highest pass with distinction.

Julia has acted for many years for clients in many jurisdictions of different religious and ethnic backgrounds, especially Malaysia and other Asian Countries, in relation to their UK investments and associated tax planning, wills, probate, trusts and succession issues.

The case study for the dissertation, for which Julia won her Excellence Award, concerned a Muslim man from the United Arab Emirates who set up a branch of the family business in France, married a French lady and lived in France with her for many years.  On retiring and selling the business they decided to move to England.  He died in England, having made an English will gifting all his assets to his French wife.  Amongst other issues, Julia had to comment in her dissertation on whether the man’s aggrieved younger brother back home in the United Arab Emirates could make a claim against the estate alleging Sharia law applied and/or whether the French widow might be better off seeking to apply the EU Succession Regulation in France and alleging French law applied.

Julia is a full member of STEP and in 2016 also sat and passed an exam leading to award of the STEP Advanced Certificate in UK Tax for International Clients.
